Is There Such a Thing as Ethical Porn?

Yes, I didn’t know that ethical porn was a thing either. Much of my research and training over the past few years has included live trainings and books to support my clients, but not to the degree needed for me to have the depth of knowledge I know I need. Earlier this year, as part of a training delivered by a sex therapist and an EFT trainer I first heard the words “ethical porn”.

What makes any porn ethical?

That depends a lot on your values and perspective. Nevertheless, here are some points to consider it you are interested in learning more about how it’s different:

  • Producers/companies that pay fairly, transparently, and compensate all people involved.
  • Consent is central: consent checklists, performers’ boundaries, ability to stop.
  • Transparent labor practices.
  • Inclusive casting (body types, genders, orientations).
  • Respectful, sex-positive content without exploitative tropes (e.g. nonconsensual, racist, age-thing, etc.).
  • Avoiding stolen content or non-legal uploads.
  • Privacy of performers, safe work environment.
  • Viewer pays creators (instead of sites relying mainly on ads or tube re-uploads). Ethical Porn

In early 2026 I will begin a Certificate program in Sex Therapy through the University of Michigan, with the ultimate goal of earning AASECT Certification. The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) is a not-for-profit, interdisciplinary professional organization. With its history of impeccable standards for training, experience and ethical behavior, AASECT is increasingly recognized as the guardian of professional standards in sexual health.

I first learned of AASECT when reading a bood which a fellow therapist had recommended: Come As You Are: Revised and Updated: The Surprising New Science That Will Transform Your Sex Life by Emily Nagoski Ph.D. Emily attended Indiana University, I attended Ball State University, A “Hoosier” (Indiana) connection was made, at least in my mind..

As a perpetually curious, life long learner. I strive to provide my clients with the best possible outcomes which means I’m always reading or listening to books and signing up for more live trainings. Thanks Emily for unknowingly sharing your path with me.

Many therapists are not comfortable with discussions around sex, which makes sense. Our training doesn’t adequately prepare us to deal with sexual issues in depth. Pursuing certification ensures I clearly understand anatomy, physiology, sexual dysfunctions, medical issues, relationship dynamics, trauma, kink, LGBTQIA+ issues which may present themselves in couples therapy. Knowledge is a bright and shiny object worth every minute and penny. This time the shiny object was ethical porn.
